It must be the cold weather. It snowed a bit overnight so there is a light dusting of snow, looks like that sun will be shining today.

This week they announced that Target is closing all it's stores in Canada. What a shame. I like to shop at Target. I wander the isles and shop for items on sale or on liquidation. Yesterday I bought 10 pairs of Xhilerate ankle socks in different colors on sale for .99. I don't know when I'll be able to buy them again, so I stocked up just in case.

I also bought some nail appliqués on Liquidation of $2.99 they were originally $9.99. I've seen people on Youtube getting them for $1.00 at the Dollar Tree, what a bargain! If you see some you should try them, they are real easy to put on. They say they stay on for 5-7 days, I don't know yet since I just put them on yesterday.

Another thing people are saying they are finding at Dollar Tree for $1.00, are little wallets or cell phone holders made by Golla, if you see any you should grab those as well, they are selling on line for $24.00 sometimes more. You can use them for all kinds of stuff and keep things neat in your handbag.

What's my excuse. I don't have one. I'm working, but I've worked before and I still posted.
Most days I can't think of anything interesting to write about but the real reason, any free time on the Internet I'm playing Farmville
and Farmville2. I admit it, I'm a Farmville junkie.

I received a recipe from a friend that I wanted to keep without losing it. Posting here is the best way for me to save it, and it's an easy way to share with my friends.

My cutting was stopped by an unusual sight. The Daylily was putting out fresh flowering scapes in the first week of October. I can only hope that the extended warm weather that we have been having, continues long enough for these flowers to develop and bloom. J K Rowlings has a new book, The Cuckoo's Calling, she wrote under the name of Robert Galbraith. I had hoped to keep this secret a little longer," JKR said, "because being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience. It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name."

I will start reading today.
The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

I wrote the above on July 15th and I did start reading "The Cuckoo's Calling" however I only read a couple of pages so far, not because I don't like the book but I picked up other books that I wanted to read. One of which was Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald. Like The Paris Wife, Z imagines what it was like being married to someone famous. I will immediately want to read any book with Paris in the title.

At the moment I am reading

As Dr. Oz points out, coconut sugar doesn't put stress on your blood sugar levels the same way that white sugar does. I thought I would share his video as he does a better job at explaining.
There is no chemical taste, why would Dr. Oz think that sugar made naturally from coconut nectar would taste like a chemical? There is also no coconut taste, important because I don't like the taste of coconut.

I bought mine at Winners (TJX company) in the US you have Marshalls, I don't know if Marshalls carries food products in the US. In Canada I often find special products that are not found in regular grocery stores. I believe that I have seen Coconut Sugar at Target in Florida, they also carry it at Health Food Stores.

Coconut Oil is recommended for everything from frying your chicken to shaving your legs. Topically applied, it is said to prevent wrinkling and be good for dry skin and hair. This fact alone should make me run out an buy it, but I haven't tried it yet. But coconut oil is more than 90 per cent saturated fat and saturated fat is considered to be a bad fat that increases overall cholesterol levels and specifically bad cholesterol. The reason this doesn't apply to coconut oil, say supporters, is that about half the saturated fat in the oil is medium-chain fatty acids, which are easier to digest than the more prevalent long-chain fatty acids in most other oils, including butter.

I have tried Coconut Milk (not in the can). So Delicious (not available here) makes amazing coconut milks - the vanilla is only 90 calories a cup and the unsweetened is 50 I believe. They have both refrigerated half gallons and shelf stable liters

The best part is that they are low fat. Instead of brown sugar I used Coconut Sugar. Coconut sugar is a better choice than refined sugar because it won't lead to fluctuating blood sugar levels. You can use it as a one-to-one replacement for both white and brown sugar. Really, you can use it in the majority of your normal recipes easily.

Must it enjoy it when we can, tomorrow, rain.

Another dismal attempt at making Quinoa bread in the Bread Machine, the worst one yet. I will try again next week. Today I am making Cinnamon Raisin Bread, the last one I made came out perfect, hopefully this one will come out as well.

Yesterday I learned to do the impossible; How To Fold a Fitted Sheet. First I watched this video How to Fold a Fitted Sheet on YouTube. The instructions were too fast for me and after a couple attempts I gave up and looked for another video. I found How to Fold a Fitted Sheet/Martha Stewart. I managed to do it after two attempts. The best advice is at the end of the video, for those of us who can't and refuse to deal with folding these. Just wash, dry and put right back onto the bed! LOL.

Didn't have much to write about. I worked at my former employer for 1 month. It was
ok but I was glad when I finished. I worked during the four very hot days we had here. After the heat it was cold again but I managed to plant some flowers and
a few vegetable plants. This year I planted Vinca instead of Impatiens, Vinca tolerate the heat and dryness. They don't like wet feet, unfortunately we had a lot of rain and I'm afraid the ground is too wet, I hope they survive. This is what I planted out front.

After a hot and humid weekend it's turned cooler again this morning, I hope the sun comes out.

About sixteen years ago I bought a bread maker and started making my own bread. I stopped when we stopped eating bread for a while. I don't care much for the grocery store bread and since bakery bread is $4.00 to $5.00 a loaf I decided to start making my own bread again. Another reason I wanted to make my own bread is that I am on a Quinoa kick and I wanted to try making my own.
After a not very successful try I decided it might be time to buy a new bread maker. I bought a Hamilton Beach bread maker, the price was right and it had good reviews.

The first bread I made was a Cinnamon Raisin bread, It came out perfect. Then I tried the Quinoa Bread, it rose nicely then fell in the middle, maybe too much liquid. On my second try, I added more flour, the dough was a bit sticky but I let it go, it didn't rise. Both breads tasted good despite the failure to rise. Today will be my third attempt at Quinoa bread, wish me luck.

Has anybody tried it? If so did it work? Next time I feel like ice cream I'm going to give it a try. First the weather has to warm up a bit.

Ice Cream in a Bag. This is SOOO easy and delicious! In a small Ziplock bag, put: 1/2 C. half and half (milk works too) 1 Tbps. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla Insert that bag into a larger, one gallon Ziplock filled with ice and salt, I used sea salt. Shake the bag for five minutes. Kids love that part! Then, remove the smaller bag which should have turned into ice cream. Isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be.
Here are some facts about the 1500's
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May,
And they still smelled pretty good by June.. However, since they were starting to smell,
Brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor.
Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water.
The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water,
Then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children.
Last of all the babies.
By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it.
Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water!"
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath.
It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals
(mice, bugs) lived in the roof.
When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof.
Hence the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs."
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.
This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings
Could mess up your nice clean bed.
Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection.
That's how canopy beds came into existence.
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt.
Hence the saying, "Dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery In the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing..
As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, It would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way.
Hence: a thresh hold.
(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)
In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire.
Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers In the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day.
Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while.
Hence the rhyme:
“Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old."
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special.
When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off.
It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home the bacon."
They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat
Those with money had plates made of pewter
Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death.
This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
Bread was divided according to status..
Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle,
And guests got the top, or the upper crust.
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky.
The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days..
Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial.
They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around
and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up.
Hence the custom; “holding a wake."
England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people.
So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave.
When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had ben burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell.
Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be,
“saved by the bell" or was "considered a dead ringer."
And that's the truth.
Now, whoever said history was boring!!!

Keep Calm and Carry On was a propaganda poster produced by the British government in 1939 during the beginning of the Second World War, intended to raise the morale of the British public in the aftermath of widely predicted mass air attacks on major cities. It had only limited distribution with no public display, and thus was little known. The poster was rediscovered in 2000, has been re-issued by a number of private companies, and has been used as the decorative theme for a range of products.
I found this little pad and pen set depicting the poster at Indigo book store and had to snap a picture.

(or who would have thought of this),

Better than paper towels .

COFFEE FILTERS

Who knew! You can buy 1,000 at the Dollar Tree, even the large ones.

1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filter make
excellent covers.
2. Clean windows, mirrors, and chrome... Coffee filters are lint-free so
they'll leave windows sparkling.
3. Protect China by separating your good dishes with a coffee filter
between each dish.
4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.
5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.
6. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.
7. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.
8. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale.
9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.
10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.
11. Prevent a Popsicle from dripping. Poke one or two holes as needed in a coffee filter.
12. Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows? Use strips of coffee filters..
13. Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc on them.. It soaks out all the grease.
14. Keep in the bathroom. They make great "razor nick fixers.."
15. As a sewing backing. Use a filter as an easy-to-tear backing for embroidering or appliquéing soft fabrics.
16. Put baking soda into a coffee filter and insert into shoes or a closet to absorb or prevent odors.
17. Use them to strain soup stock and to tie fresh herbs in to put in soups and stews.
18 Use a coffee filter to prevent spilling when you add fluids to your car..
19. Use them as a spoon rest while cooking and clean up small counter spills.
20. Can use to hold dry ingredients when baking or when cutting a piece of
fruit or veggies. Saves on having extra bowls to wash.
21. Use them to wrap Christmas ornaments for storage.
22. Use them to remove fingernail polish when out of cotton balls.
23. Use them to sprout seeds. Simply dampen the coffee filter, place seeds
inside, fold it and place it into a zip-lock plastic bag until they sprout.
24. Use coffee filters as blotting paper for pressed flowers. Place the flowers between two coffee filters and put the coffee filters in phone book.
25. Use as a disposable "snack bowl" for popcorn, chips, etc.
26. Great in the tool room when separating nails and screws then use in to bottom of containers to remove moisture and prevent rust.

We spent the morning at the vet. They had to anesthetize Felix to examine him. Three people plus Tony tried to muzzle him with no success.

He was diagnosed with UTI and given an antibiotic shot, the shot lasts for 10 days. His bladder was small when he was examined (no urine).

We were advised that if he did not urinate by 9:00 PM to take him to the emergency. If a cat doesn’t urinate in 24 hrs it could be fatal.

He spent the afternoon lying in his litter box.
He came out to eat then scurried back in to lie down in the liter box, no pee.
He didn’t urinate so off we went to the emergency. He had to be anesthetized again. They shaved, cleaned the area and extracted clotted blood and sandy debris.‘Distal aspect of p***s was erythematous’.
The veterinarian was able to empty the bladder, there wasn’t any blockage. There was blood in the urine. They filled pockets of under his armpits with distilled water to hydrate him. We were given `Prazosin' for spasms of the urethra, Prazosin is a drug that is used in dogs and cats to treat high blood pressure, congestive heart failure. The vet also gave us a pain killer to give him twice a day. We came home at 1:30 AM.

Felix used his litter box when we arrived, we still needed to watch for urination, if he had not urinated by 11:30 Thursday we would have to go back to the vet.

Felix is getting better, he sleeps mostly but he eats and uses his litter box regularly.
Today Felix woke us up at 6:00 AM, he is on the mend.

I have finished reading two books since my last post. The first book was "End of Your Life Book Club" by Will Schwalbe.

This was one of my favorite quotes from the book:
"Reading isn't the opposite of doing; it's the opposite of dying."

"The End of Your Life Book Club" is about the final two years of Mary Ann Schwalbe, who died after battling pancreatic cancer. The End of Your Life Book Club had two members: Will and his mother. It started when Will took his mother to her chemotherapy sessions. During the treatments the two talked about books. At first, they talked about what each other had been reading. As time progressed, they began reading the same book, so that they could discuss it while Mary Ann had her treatments.

It was interesting to learn about the books they read together and their discussions because they LOVE books and have been reading/discussing books since Will was a boy. It introduced me to quite a few books that I've put on my "want to read" list.

Mary Ann didn't let cancer slow her down much. She managed to travel, both domestically and abroad. She wanted to see her grandchildren grow up. There came a point where chemotherapy no longer worked, and her tumors grew. Mary Ann never whined or complained. She made funeral arrangements and wrote letters to for her grandchildren to open when she was gone.

“That’s one of the things books do. They help us talk. But they also give us something we all can talk about when we don’t want to talk about ourselves.”

The second book I finished was "The Imposter Bride". I chose this book because the premise sounded interesting, and I enjoy historical fictions plus part of the story takes place in Montreal, but I found the storyline dragged and the ending was disappointing.
Good things you should know about the pineapple...
A Simple Pineapple - a MUST read!

The pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family. It is extremely rare that bromeliads produce edible fruit. The pineapple is the only available edible bromeliad today.

It is a multiple fruit. One pineapple is actually made up of dozens of individual floweret's that grow together to form the entire fruit. Each scale on a pineapple is evidence of a separate flower.

Pineapples stop ripening the minute they are picked. No special way of storing them will help ripen them further. Color is relatively unimportant in determining ripeness. Choose your pineapple by smell. If it smells fresh, tropical and sweet... it will be a good fruit..

The more scales on the pineapple, the sweeter and juicier the taste.

After you cut off the top, you can plant it. It should grow much like a sweet potato will.

This delicious fruit is not only sweet and tropical; it also offers many benefits to our health. Pineapple is a remarkable fruit.

We find it enjoyable because of its lush, sweet and exotic flavor, but it may also be one of the most healthful foods available today. If we take a more detailed look at it, we will find that pineapple is valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis or sinusitis.

The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms.

Let's look at how pineapple affects other conditions.

Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of
strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount.

It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become brittle with age.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple's value. Proteolytic means "breaks down protein", which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently. Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-inflammatory.

Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis. It also produces mild pain relief.

In Germany , bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is
thought to reduce inflammation and swelling.

Orange juice is a popular liquid for those suffering from a cold because it
is high in Vitamin C. Fresh pineapple is not only high in this vitamin, but because of the Bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucous in the throat.
If you have a cold with a productive cough, add pineapple to your diet. It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucous after certain sinus and throat operations.

Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems
related to allergies. In and of itself, pineapple has a very low risk for allergies.

Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. This makes it a valuable dietary addition for frequent fliers and others who may be at risk for blood clots.

An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice. it really works! Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morning often make a difference.

It's also good for a healthier mouth. The fresh juice discourages plaque growth.

The doctor says it's a fold in the eye, possibly from an injury. I looked it up and it could be the result of vigorous eye rubbing. In any case he has some drops to put in his eye before bedtime.

It's warm here in not so sunny Florida. Yes it's been cloudy for the past two days and it is supposed to rain today. I went to the gym yesterday and I think I may go again today. I met a lady from Montreal, she goes to the same gym I do at home (not the same branch) she did four classes yesterday, she will probably be there today.

I found this neat site Myfitnesspal.com. At MyFitnessPal.com, you can track net calories:

Net Calories = Calories Consumed - Calories Burned Through Exercise

So the more you exercise, the more you can eat! They also track a variety of other nutritional values which can help you maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet.
In my case to lose .5 lbs per week I have to consume 1200 calories a day and workout 4x a week. My goal is not to gain weight. This site makes it easy to count calories. I usually don't count calories, I just try to eat good things avoid sugar, snacks and limit processed foods. Exercise has been a big factor for keeping my weight stable. Bonus I love it!

I finished reading Sutton by J.R. Moehringer. I was captivated by this book. Moehringer blended historical facts with his imagination to produce an entertaining and well told story. Anyone who appreciates a well written book, loves New York, and has an interest in twentieth century stories, is likely to enjoy this novel.
I have started reading
The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker, bookworm and band geek, plays second clarinet and spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to center stage of her own life - and, despite her nonexistent history with boys, suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two. Toby was Bailey'...more

I chose this book because it had great reviews. Although beautifully written it is a little too flowery for me. I can understand Lennie's actions and I like her memories of her sister and the closeness between them, and her hippie Grandma, but still, I can't connect with Lennie, which makes reading this book difficult. I'm anxious to finish it and move on to something else.

It was fast light read, chic literature. At first I didn't care for the storyline. Something not quite right about the main character, Rachel, sleeping with her best friend's (Darcy) fiance (Dex).

The whole book I kept trying to get inside Dex's head to figure out why he was cheating, why he wouldn't make a decision, why he stayed with Darcy. He said he loved Rachel. So why couldn't make a decision.

Actually I don't think the story is as much about the love triangle as it is about friendship. The story of childhood turned adult friendship was very well done. Even though I wanted to strangle Darcy, I could see why Rachel had remained friends with her.

Willie Sutton was born in the squalid Irish slums of Brooklyn, in the first year of the twentieth century, and came of age at a time when banks were out of control. Something Borrowed is the story of a smart young woman in New York who falls in love with her best friend's fiancé. True chick-lit, a fun quick read.

Today I am meeting friends for lunch. We are going to the Piazetta a favorite spot for pizza or a salad. The restaurant has a nice outdoor terrace, but there will be no sitting on the terrace drinking Sangria today as the temperature will be around 32F today.

This weekend I will begin packing for our trip to Florida, I cannot wait to be in the warm weather once more.

Rowlings.

It took me a little while to warm up to Pagford and its citizens, but once I did, I didn't want to stop reading. It started slow for me, it was hard at first to remember who was married to who but once more details about the characters were given, I got interested in the story. There is much sadness and showing of the dark side of life, at times it was a bit disturbing. I wouldn’t recommend it to someone looking for a light and easy read that will leave them in a good mood.

I have started reading A Secret Kept by Tatiana de Rosnay.

This stunning new novel from Tatiana de Rosnay, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller Sarah’s Key, plumbs the depths of complex family relationships and the power of a past secret to change everything in the present.

It all began with a simple seaside vacation, a brother and sister recapturing their childhood. Antoine Rey thought he had the perfect surprise for...more

I chose this book because I read Sarah's Key and loved it. Originally I planned to read Emily Giffin's "Something Borrowed" but "A Secret Kept" was in my Iphone and I needed something to read while I was on the bus.

Today I highlighted my hair. I had the impulsive urge to get my hair highlighted, but didn't feel right shelling out the cash to get it done professionally. I got a Revlon Frost and Glow highlighting kit for medium to dark brown hair.

Simple and easy to do, but it is best you have someone with you to help you out, specifically with the back parts. Lucky for me I had my obliging husband to help me out.

I was a little concerned when I removed the plastic cap that you put over your head after you apply the solution, my hair turned orange first, then yellow - I didn't panic, I remembered what I had read, this is normal and it is your color lifting. It will then turn blonde. Indeed it did turn blonde and I am happy with the results.
The only thing is that the blonde highlights that I had turned blonder. The instructions advise you to not pull previously highlighted strands through the holes. This is easier said than done as you cannot see your hair through the cap that you use to pull the hair strands thru. This will be fixed the next time I do my roots.

I took a picture but the lighting is not very good, you will just have to believe me when I say it didn't turn out bad and I would definitely do it again. Oh yes one more thing I left the solution on for 35 minutes, this was the perfect amount of time for my hair.
